A gathering place. Living starts here.
History
North Wilkesboro was founded in 1891 when Norfolk Southern built its terminus railroad depot near the Yadkin River. That depot still stands downtown. From the start, the town was called the "Key City to Western North Carolina" — the last stop before the mountains, the first stop back.
Textile and furniture manufacturing fueled the town's early growth. Its history also includes a documented line from bootlegging to the start of modern-day racing — a piece of local record we point to without turning into a costume.

Arts & culture
The town is building a hub for the arts: the Wilkes Art Gallery, the Wilkes Playmakers performing at historic Benton Hall, and live music performances at "the Market." It's not a gallery district trying to become a town — it's a town that keeps making room for art.
Two Rivers
The Yadkin and the Reddies meet here. That confluence is more than geography — it's the unifying identity of the town. The Library checks out fishing poles. Mountain-bike trails start not far from Main Street. The rivers are the reason people slow down.
